The very first post on the Trucker Tech blog was focused on the Vonage V-Phone and now, it seems, Vonage is all set to improve the package. If you don't remember the post or you just don't know what the V-Phone is, let me refresh your memory. Vonage, whose marketing seems to be far more focused on home VoIP users rather than mobile users, and whose spent far more time swimming with the sharks (read: fighting legal battles) than developing new products, did come up with the V-Phone that allows users to turn their laptop into a VoIP phone by plugging a dongle device into an available USB port.
The V-Phone comes pre-loaded with Vonage Talk software and, with a subscription to Vonage service, you can make calls from any broadband Internet-connected PC that has an available USB port. This product was originally produced, though, back before the sharks appeared in the previously placid waters of the Vonage sea. Since then they've been kind of preoccupied; and understandably so. That's all behind them now, or at least it seems that way.
That's why I was really excited when I read today, that Vonage is finally updating the V-Phone. Apparently, they're adding support for Mac users, which should do wonders for expanding their user base, and they're adding Bluetooth support, which is great because connecting the microphone and ear-piece into the dongle was anything but handy. They may be updating the design of the USB dongle, as well, although, unlike some, I don't really find the design all that unappealing.
As far as I know, all the stuff I wrote about the V-Phone previously still pertains:
To use the V-Phone you simply insert it into the USB port on your laptop (you could also use an Internet kiosk or Internet Cafe PC provided you have access to a USB port) , plug the Stereo Earpiece Microphone into the side, and you're ready to make and receive calls. When you remove the drive the phone and any other information stored on it go with you.
If you're a current Vonage customer you can use your existing Vonage number but, if that's your home phone, you'll probably want to sign up for a separate account. The V-Phone can be ordered from Vonage.com, at a cost of $39.99, and a subscription to a Vonage monthly calling plan will run you between $14.99 and $34.99 a month.
